Brief Biographical Sketch:
I am a mechanical engineering alum, live in the Silicon Valley and my "stuff" includes providing training and technical support for SolidWorks, a CAD Software; working and maintaining several social groups; volunteering when I can; photography and others. The objective of this class: With an understanding of cancer, can you think of a career in medicine/science/engineering that will help you understand and cure the disease?
Cancer is a disease that a lot of scientists are trying to fight and cure. Do you want to be at the forefront of a group of hardworking scientists and researchers helping find a cure?
What is cancer? How many types of disease are there? How does it attack the human body? How is cancer detected? How is the disease currently treated?
What does it take to build a career in science, one that helps you fight diseases like cancer?

E1275: Leaving the Earth a bit greener! in Splash! Spring 2011 (Apr. 16 - 17, 2011)
So, you have all heard that you need to be “green” nowadays. Maybe there was a class you were at, or maybe your parents were discussing this stuff. We are going to spend some time trying to understand how our lifestyle, the way we live, go to school, go to work and everything else is affecting the planet. Here’s what we will discuss:
1. How can you change the way you live to help the planet?
2. What is energy? Why do we care so much about oil? How do we handle our energy needs for tomorrow?
3. What is the deal with recycling and composting? How can we all help?
If time permits, we will discuss related topics

But what exactly does an engineer do?
What does it take to be an engineer and is it ever going to be exciting?
Well, from buildings to cars, from robots to spacecrafts, from medical devices to video games, engineers do it all...well, there are engineers who specialize in all kinds of cool stuff.
Come to this class, let's open it up and discuss what engineers do!

S1135: Science is fun - how to observe, record and understand the world around you in Splash! Fall 2010 (Nov. 13 - 14, 2010)
Can science be interesting? If it weren't so interesting, why would we have so many scientists having all this fun?
Science goes beyond simply reading your textbook. It involves observing the way the world works, trying to measure what we see against what we know and trying to fill any gaps between what we see and what we expect to see and then prove it through testing.
This is how Gregory Mendel, a monk, started the science of genetics!
Our class is not limited to the specifics of math, physics, chemistry, biology etc. We will focus on examples - on observing things, asking questions and trying to come up with answers.
We will try to include a variety of examples of physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy and a couple of examples from "biomimicry" to better understand the art and science of observation and experimentation.
The idea is for you to come in excited and walk away a little more excited about science either as a career or a hobby.
The class is more appropriate for folks in the 9th through 12th grades. If you are from an earlier grade, and have had a couple of science classes and really want to be in this class, that is okay.
E791: Sustainable Living for a sustainable world in Splash! Spring 2010 (Apr. 17 - 18, 2010)
Why is this class in engineering? Good engineers learn science and apply them to make the world a better place to live in.
You have heard of all the "green" stuff going on.
You probably realize that you should conserve more, turn off your lights and so on.
How about learning to build a career in sustainability? What does it take to design buildings, machinery, transportation and other aspects of our day to day life in such a way that we still enjoy a comfortable life and leave the world a better place?

S470: Cancer - what you need to know ; what you can do! in Splash! Fall 2009 (Oct. 10 - 11, 2009)
As we fight diseases better, and learn how to live longer and healthier, we face new enemies and one of them is cancer. Another reason why you hear more about cancer is because we have better tools to find cancer soon. The sooner we get to a "diagnosis", the better we can treat people and the longer and healthier we can make them.
Still the fight is not over. For the most part, it has just begun.
We will talk about our bodies, our cells, how cancer arises and we will also discuss a few "choices" we can make to try and beat cancer.
The class will be in three parts: Understanding the body and cancer ; Diagnosis and Treatment ; Fighting Cancer.
