Brief Biographical Sketch:
Lyla is a senior majoring in environmental anthropology. She has been practicing the art of spoken word for seven years and running spoken word workshops for youth all the while. She has won national, state and regional competitions for her slam poetry. She writes to raise awareness in people about their own beauty and about social issues from indigenous peoples' rights to media illiteracy. Spoken word is a powerful tool used by youth to express ideas and emotions or raise awareness about social or political issues. In this course students will see examples from professional spoken word artists and will be writing their own poetry on any topic they choose. Performance is be encouraged but will remain optional.
P95: Spoken Word in Splash! Fall 2008 (Oct. 18, 2008)
A spoken word workshop where students will see spoken word artists perform. Several writing exercises will be implemented and, if a student would like, they will write and share their own poetry
