H6313: Character Creation: The Art of Playing God in Splash Spring 2018 (May. 05 - 06, 2018)
A fundamental aspect of storytelling is developing a dynamic character. In this class, students will examine a selection of characters in popular media and understand what makes them so compelling. From these examples, students will craft their own original characters and immerse them in one of multiple fictional worlds. The class will culminate in a reflection on the newly created characters. The class will touch upon topics of philosophy and literature, raising questions of ethical authorship and the power of creation. The class consists of three parts: a lecture, a workshop, and a concluding seminar. Potential characters that the class will analyze may come from media like Game of Thrones, Gravity Falls, Frankenstein, and more.
