X8095: A History of Chinatowns in the United States in Splash Fall 2024 (Nov. 16 - 17, 2024)
Why does every major United States city have a Chinatown, and why were they constructed? Discover the history of Chinese immigration in the US, from the mid-19th century gold rush to now. We will examine the social, cultural, and economic factors that shaped these unique urban enclaves, as well as the challenges and contributions of Chinese immigrant communities. Through a discussion of landmark events, including the Chinese Exclusion Act and the impact of urban renewal, participants will gain insight into the evolution of Chinatowns as centers of resilience, cultural preservation, and transformation in American cities.
