Brief Biographical Sketch:
Donald is a sophomore majoring in Human Biology and a Co-Executive Director of Stanford Students Taking On Poverty. He ultimately plans to pursue a career in medicine. Donald's interest in poverty developed when he realized that working in the medical field would also require an understanding of the variety of societal barriers people face to healthy lifestyles, including access to food, shelter, and sustainable income sources. Consider this: The US has the largest national economy in the world, yet also has some of the highest relative poverty rates among industrialized countries. What kinds of factors have led to this difference in wealth? What kinds of support systems are offered to combat poverty in America? How can we further combat these trends? In this class we will discuss food security, access to shelter, healthcare, income and educational inequality, and other contributing factors to poverty in America.
