E8183: Disaster Masters: Building Resilient Cities in Splash Fall 2025 (Nov. 15 - 16, 2025)
As the climate continues to change, the impact of natural hazards like fires, hurricanes, and floods are becoming more frequent and severe. Have you ever wondered if there is anything you can do about it? In this class, we will learn about the ways natural hazards put our communities at risk and how we can better prepare, plan for, and respond to these events. Through an interactive game, you will take on the role of a community planner to make decisions to protect your city from natural hazards. May the most resilient city win!

E7994: Building an Earthquake Resistant Structure in Splash Spring 2024 (May. 18 - 19, 2024)
Buildings in highly seismic areas, such as California and Japan, need to be designed to protect people and give them a chance to get out. There is no way to design an earthquake proof building, but engineers figure out ways to reduce damage and keep people safe. In this course we will discuss the basics of earthquake engineering and students will learn how to design earthquake-resistant structures through an interactive activity.
