Brief Biographical Sketch:
Hello, I'm Lela (pronounced LEE-lah, not LAY-lah)! I'm a Bay Area native (I grew up in Los Altos) who hopes to use geophysics to better understand the Earth and to help us live more safely and sustainably on this planet. In my free time, I love reading, folding origami, working in theater, embroidering, hiking, and practicing rosemaling. Dear reader of this bio, you may wonder if I am qualified to teach a class on writing. I can assure you that I am. I have tutored writing for many years, scored 5's on the AP Language and AP Literature tests, and one of my essays won the Boothe Prize at Stanford, out of all first-year students enrolled in the Program in Writing & Rhetoric. I read often and love to talk about what makes good writing, especially as I observe over-reliance on AI in many of my peers. I've wanted to teach a class at SPLASH for many years, and it's an honor to teach one of the subjects I am most passionate about. I hope to see you or your child there! Love writing essays? Hate writing essays? Have to write an essay by 10 P.M.? What if I told you that 1) your teachers have reasons for making you do all this and 2) it can actually be fun?
We'll take insights from creative writing, journalism, theater, and more to explore how YOU can use writing to refine your thoughts and persuasively express your ideas. We'll discuss how to choose a good concept, write a strong thesis, hook your reader, find evidence, get unstuck, nail the details, write beautifully, and benefit from community. Most of all, we'll talk about what writing is for and why you should care about writing as well as you can.
As a student who has written award-winning essays at Stanford, this class is a practical compilation of everything I wish I knew sooner.
"Tips & Tools" is designed primarily for students who are currently taking Honors or AP-level writing classes. Nevertheless, everyone who wants to learn is welcome!
P8251: “Shakespeare on its Feet" Workshop with the Stanford Shakespeare Company in Splash Fall 2025 (Nov. 15 - 16, 2025)

Are you interested in the performing arts? Reciting poetry, perhaps? Or maybe you just want to bring some Renaissance era whimsy into your life? If any of these ring true, then greetings, young thespian! This workshop is for you!
Led by members of the Stanford Shakespeare Company, this workshop will provide a general introduction to reading, understanding, and performing Shakespeare. Students will participate in theatrical exercises, read scenes from multiple Shakespeare plays, and have the opportunity to perform themselves! Members of StanShakes will help get students understand Shakespeare with an emphasis on performance, teaching students how to relate the material to their own lives while providing helpful performance critique. If you seek your chance in the spotlight performing the works of the most famous playwright in history, this course is for you!
